The Story Behind the Shop
Meet the Maker
Some furniture makers inherit the trade. Michael Ortolano earned it.
Michael started as a scenic carpenter in Albany, New York — but Oregon had other plans. He made Portland home in 2002 and never looked back. What followed was more than a decade of immersion, sharpening his skills at Portland Center Stage and a local fine furniture shop, working shoulder-to-shoulder with veteran craftsmen and mastering techniques passed down, practiced, and refined over thousands of hours at the bench.
When the pandemic shuttered the shop in 2020, Michael didn't stop. He scaled down, worked out of his garage, and rediscovered the quiet satisfaction of building something beautiful by hand. That spark became a company. In July 2020, PDX Woodworks was born.
We build furniture the way it used to be built — by hand, one piece at a time, from real wood that will outlast the trends. PDX Woodworks is a Portland, Oregon custom furniture maker specializing in handcrafted dining tables and custom wood pieces built for the way you actually live.
The Shop
Today, PDX Woodworks operates out of a 1,500 sq ft workshop and showroom in Portland, Oregon — a space built around one simple idea: that great furniture deserves to be made with care, one piece at a time.
This is not a production facility. Every custom dining table, desk, and bedroom piece that leaves this shop is built from American domestic hardwoods — including Pacific maple and black walnut sourced from the Pacific Northwest, and occasionally urban salvage timber from Portland itself.
Michael's finish of choice is a time-tested oil and wax. It nourishes the wood, enhances its natural grain, and gets better with age — just like the furniture itself.
The Philosophy
Michael specializes in handcrafted dining tables because he believes they are the most important piece of furniture in a home. The table is where families gather, where homework gets done, where decisions get made and memories get formed. It deserves to be built accordingly.
Every PDX Woodworks piece is an investment — not in the financial sense alone, but in the life you want to live at home. Built from locally sourced hardwoods, finished naturally, and crafted with techniques that have stood the test of time, these are pieces designed to be passed down, not replaced.
That's what it means to be a local furniture maker in Portland. Not just building furniture — building something worth keeping.
